Major loanshark ring busted

Police have busted a loanshark syndicate believed to be responsible for some 350 harassment reports here and which is also thought to have overseas operations. Seven Singaporean men, aged 23 to 38, were nabbed on July 1.

Criminal Investigation Department and Police Intelligence Department officers arrested five of the suspects in a raid on several locations, including the Jurong Point, Redhill Close and Yio Chu Kang areas. Two others were caught at the Woodlands Checkpoint as they were returning to Singapore.

First-time offenders convicted of loanshark harassment may be fined between $4,000 and $40,000 or jailed for up to 3 years, or both. They can also be caned if property was damaged or persons hurt.
