What is your reaction to the insensitive remarks made by Pastor Rony Tan?
Deputy PM and Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng:

What Pastor Rony Tan said and did at his evangelism sharing sessions was clearly offensive to Buddhists and Taoists. In fact, it has angered even Singaporeans who are not Buddhists and Taoists.

I am glad to note that Pastor Tan has realised his mistake and has met up with the Buddhist and Taoist leaders today to personally apologise for his actions.

This is the right thing to do.

I am also heartened to learn that the Buddhist and Taoist leaders, while understandably upset with the incident, have accepted Pastor Tan's apology and have urged restraint on the part of their religious communities.

This is also the right thing to do.

When there is a problem, we must resolve it rationally and constructively.

The Government cannot allow anyone to exploit and escalate any issue to whip up emotions and tensions on the ground between our ethnic and religious communities.

Mutual respect, tolerance and restraint are critical to maintaining communal peace and harmony in our multi-ethnic, multi-religious society.

Religious leaders especially, must lead and set the right example in this regard.

While each of us is free to propagate our religious beliefs, it must never be by way of insulting or denigrating the religious beliefs of others.

This is a fundamental OB marker that we must all steer by in Singapore."

Why were the three youngsters on Facebook treated differently from Pastor Rony Tan?

Deputy PM & Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng: It is a very serious matter if anyone were to be hauled up and investigated by ISD. It is not less serious than getting investigated by the Police.

I assure you that it is not.

The bottom-line in such cases is that we must ensure that the OB markers are clear and that transgressions are dealt with in a balanced and professional manner. Our agencies must be allowed to exercise their professional judgment on how best to achieve this outcome.

In the case of the Facebook incident, a complaint was made to the Police of an offence. The Police are investigating it and will refer it to the Attorney-Gerneral's Chambers who in turn will determine the appropriate conclusion to the matter.

We should let this Police investigation take place without interference or prejudging or speculating what that outcome will be or should be.

Senior pastor Rony Tan is a veteran Christian evangelist with a flock of 12 000 members. He must have been resorting to mocking and telling lies about Buddhism & Taoism for many years until now when the video clips became hard evidence for ISD to "nail" him. Many S'poreans share the same sentiment as Francis Chua above, that for openly mocking another religion in front of a large gathering and for posting the insensitive remarks over YouTube for a world audience, the senior pastor has committed a serious offence under the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act (MRHA), and should does be jailed. A mere warning by ISD does not justify the seriousness of the offence. It sends a wrong signal to the world that the MRHA is merely a paper tiger, which of course isn't true.

The teaching...be mindful of our View, Intention, Speech, Action. Be Mindful, Concentrate... ... With the right meditation, it makes us happy, it brings us peace. It makes us mindful of ourselves, of things around us, people around us. Be compassionate, be kind. But when people are doing things to harm us, we act with wisdom. We don't follow blindly or just simply being kind and compassionate. We use our kindness and compassionate with wisdom. The teacher says Don't believe just because I am a Budha. ALways search the truth. When we realise the truth, we realise wisdom. If one do not know what he or she is chanting, or mediating, he/she should search for answers and be enlightened. When one don't do things well, don't blamed it on the faith or teaching. Blamed it on our own lack of knowledge, lack of wisdom, lack of enlightenment, lack of effort to learn and explore more. The teaching is good, but some people just do not know how to do it well. But do not blamed others for things we do not do well. The teaching says... sometimes people hurt us due to their ignorance and misunderstanding. Well, if someone scold us pig, do we get angry... NO, we look at our back... if we have no tail, we know it is not the truth. If it is not the truth, why get angry. So we continue to practise to be mindful, kind and compassionate. But when people distort information, we must also correct them. And they taught ...Don't be angry, Don't be greedy, Dont be Blind. And more to learn and explore.

Rony Tan deliberately ridicule Buddhism and Taoism and I also believe that many churches in Singapore also ridicule the 2 religious. I plead with our Gov. to do something about this bad practice, if this carry on for another 30 years SG will leave with only Christianity and Islam

I am a free thinker; I strongly feel that Rony must go to jail as a deterrent, so that other pastors will preach in a correct manner.
