THE wife of Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has been warded at Tan Tock Seng Hospital in a serious condition, said the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) in a statement issued last night.
.
Mrs Lee (picture), whose maiden name is Kwa Geok Choo, 87, suffered sudden weakness in her left side and slurring of speech at 12.20pm on Monday.
.
She was taken to the National Neuroscience Institute for an urgent brain scan, which revealed massive right intra-cerebral haemorrhage. She was subsequently admitted to the Neurointensive Care Unit at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
.
The haemorrhage stabilised after two days of close monitoring and treatment. Mrs Lee was transferred to the general ward on Wednesday. The PMO statement said she remained in serious condition but was able to recognise immediate family members.
.
This is not the first time Mrs Lee, one of the three founders of law firm Lee & Lee, has suffered a stroke. She was in London with Mr Lee on Oct 25, 2003, when she took ill. According to reports quoting her doctors, the bleeding in her brain left a clot bigger than a squash ball.
.
After nearly a month's stay at Singapore General Hospital, she was discharged and went back to nearly all her usual daily activities, celebrating her 83rd birthday in December.
.
She continued to accompany her husband on his visits abroad, including a three-nation trip to the Middle East in March.
