iOS games to keep you occupied over the Christmas weekend!

Christmas is here already? How time flies! During this festive season, here are some iOS games to keep you, your friends and your family entertained through this weekend of merry-making. Merry Christmas, everyone! 1. Monopoly for iPad (US$9.99)

Tabletop mode in Monopoly for iPad

The eternal property boardgame, Monopoly, is now on your iPad. Yes, you no longer need to deal with missing notes or dice. Just start a game, touch, hold and flick the virtual dice and your Iron Hat or Thimble will move accordingly. You can take on up to three in-game computer opponents. Or you can connect multiple devices to play with up to four players via WiFi or Bluetooth. But for your Christmas parties, you can use the iPad-exclusive tabletop mode where friends and family can crowd around the iPad to play and enjoy the fantastic animation of Monopoly for iPad. It's really fun and refreshing to see your poor Car ending up behind bars! 2. Scrabble for iPad (On offer now at US$0.99)

Play against computer opponents or your friends on Scrabble for iPad

Have a blast constructing words during this Christmas with your friends on Scrabble for iPad. As usual, you can play against in-game computer opponents or take turns with your friends to construct words by passing the iPad around. But if all your friends have iPhones, ask them to download the free Scrabble Tile Rack App and they can use their iPhones as their personal tile rack. Then, four of you can flick the tiles virtually onto the iPad in the Party Play Mode. Yes, it is cool but you can only flick the tiles onto the iPad. After that, you will still need to drag the tiles on the iPad to form the words. In addition, you have to make sure all the apps are downloaded from the same country store, or else you might have trouble syncing to the iPad. Buy the game now at US$0.99 before it reverts to its usual price of US$9.99! 3. Jenga for iPad (On offer at US$0.99)

Easy, easy...

Want to play Jenga but afraid of all the mess it might cause when the blocks come tumbling down? Well, you can now play Jenga on the iPad. The premise remains the same but as you are dealing with something that is 2D instead of 3D, it's not going to feel like the real thing even with its real-time 3D physics simulation. You tap on the block you want to move to select it, then hold and drag to extract the block or tap to nudge it out. You can play in arcade, classic and "play and pass" mode. The "play and pass" mode will be the party favourite, as you play against your friends taking turns to take out the blocks. Again, this game is on offer at US$0.99, for a limited time only. 4. Angry Birds Season for iPad (US$1.99)

Shucks... I missed... Hate Christmas parties and the Orchard Road shopping crowd? Well, you can stay at home and play the game that needs no introduction ... Angry Birds but in the seasonal packs. With Angry Birds Season, you are getting two game packs in one app as it contains the "Trick or Treat" Halloween pack as well as the "Seasons' Greedings" Christmas pack. So, have fun sling-shooting cute angry birds to take down those despicable green pigs hiding in their fortified adobes. 5. Dungeon Hunter 2 (US$6.99) If you are a Diablo fan, you have to get Dungeon Hunter 2 (DH2) to quench your thirst for Diablo 3 (if the latter ever gets released).

Yup, that's me. You can choose to be a Warrior, Rogue or Mage. Later on, you can even specialise within your class. For example, you can upgrade your Warrior to be a Berserker or a Crusader. The story of DH2 is really lame, complete with cheesy subtitled dialogue. However, the graphics are nice (not comparable to Infinity Blade but still good), with beautiful forests and dark dungeons along with realistic sound effects. The hack-and-slash gameplay is awesomely addictive.

Die! Loot is readily available for you to pick up after you kill your foes. You can sell the loot to merchants for gold to buy more useful equipment. But if you are stuck in a dungeon with too many pieces of armour, you can always transmute the items into gold. The caveat is you will get much less gold for the same item you sell to merchants. The lack of a save function really keeps you going; the game only auto-saves at certain checkpoints. Luckily, your experience points, stats and inventory items will always be saved. Note that the game will suck the life out of the device battery. My fully-charged iPhone drops to 84% after playing the game for only 10 minutes! In addition, while both the iPhone and iPad versions of the game cost US$6.99 each, one purchase won't get you the game on both devices. Nevertheless, DH2 is a great game for you to while away the time during this holiday season.
