iPad App Recommendation: Duke Nukem 3D SE

Remember him?

If you've not heard of the guy pictured above, you're either too young or you don't play computer games. Duke Nukem is hailed by many as the king game character of first-person shooters. However, his last appearance on any platform was eight years ago. Since we've all been waiting forever for the next game, Duke Nukem Forever, why not play the iconic Duke Nukem 3D on your Apple iPad?

Start page of Duke Nukem 3D SE The game revolves around Los Angeles being attacked by aliens whose intention is to steal chicks for breeding (really?!). You play as Duke Nukem, whose mission is to boot these aliens off the face of the Earth. This game is meant for those aged 12 and above - be prepared for some lewd comments. Ported from the original game of 1996, the graphics are not fantastic. Upon starting the game, you will be asked to select the controls. In addition to the analog stick controller, the game offers a slider-type control - I don't recommend it as it's just not intuitive to use. Also, this iOS version of the game offers TapShoot, which allows you to tap on the enemies in order to quickly aim and shoot them. However, in practice, you have to take your hands off the screen from the movement button to tap on the enemies. This makes you slower in shooting those buggers. Don't bother with TapShoot, I say.

Kill that alien, Duke! The default setting of Analog controls is no better as you can't control Duke properly and quickly in order to aim and fire your weapon correctly. After disabling strafe and tapping Centre of Viewstick to fire, controlling Duke becomes smoother. At least, this works for me and I can enjoy his gritty humour while getting rid of the alien threat. While this might not be Halo or even N.O.V.A on iPad, it is still an entertaining way to kill time. Plus, for only a limited time, Duke Nukem 3D SE ($1.99) is free! Get it now before you have to pay for it.
