SINGAPORE — Tonight (Oct 8) the moon will be bathed in a red glow as a total lunar eclipse occurs, which is when the moon passes completely through the Earth's dark shadow. In Singapore, the start of the total lunar eclipse is estimated to be at 6.25pm. The moon will be in total eclipse from moonrise, estimated to be at 6.52pm tonight, according to The Astronomical Society of Singapore.
During such an eclipse, the Moon will gradually get darker and then take on a rusty or blood red color. It will be visible from Singapore from about 6.55pm to 8.34pm, said the society.
The moon appears orange or red because of sunlight scattering off the Earth's atmosphere, hence the name Blood Moon. Only North America, Australia, western South America and parts of East Asia will be able to see the spectacle tonight, while Europe, Africa and the eastern part of Brazil will miss out.
The blood moon seen around the world tonight is the second of four expected lunar eclipses. The first was on April 15 this year, and after tonight, the next one is expected on April 4 next year. Here are some of the reactions to the phenomenon:
