SINGAPORE — Marriott International, which on Monday secured antitrust approval from the European Union to acquire Starwood in a merger transaction, is scouting for the “right partner, property and place” in the Republic to launch at least another five of its 19 hotel brands here.

“Occupancies and room rates are still high in Singapore … We would like to have Renaissance, Courtyard, Fairfield, Moxy and Bvlgari in Singapore. It is about finding the right location for these brands, the perfect product which means the property and the right partner,” said Mr Craig S Smith, president and managing director of Marriott International in Asia Pacific to TODAY at the sidelines of a press conference to introduce two of the group’s brands into Singapore.

The Marriott managed properties in Singapore currently include the Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza on Orchard Road and The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore.

Marriott announced yesterday the addition of two brands from its portfolio — JW Marriott and EDITION — to the Singapore hotel industry.

In the first, Marriott and South Beach Consortium (a joint venture between City Developments Limited and IOI Properties Group Berhad) signed an agreement that will see the US hotel chain manage the South Beach Hotel, with a comprehensive rebranding to the JW Marriott Hotel Singapore. The South Beach hotel, located on Beach Rd, is a 634-room luxury property.

In addition, Marriott, together with American hotelier Ian Schrager and Granmil Holdings (a joint venture between Hong Leong Holdings, CDL and Lea Investments), also introduced The Singapore EDITION, an eight-storey boutique hotel with 190 rooms. The hotel, when open in 2019, will be located on the former Boulevard Hotel site on Orchard Boulevard and Cuscaden Rd.

“Singapore is one of the most important business and travel hubs in Asia Pacific and the world. We are very excited to enhance our luxury hotel portfolio and bring more options to this vibrant city … We have 200 hotels in Asia Pacific and by next year, we will have about 550 hotels,” said Mr Smith.

In March, Marriott clinched the deal to acquire Starwood Hotels & Resorts for US$13.6 billion (S$18.8 billion) in a bidding war with China’s Anbang. The merger will create the world’s largest hotel operating company with 5,500 hotels in more than 100 countries.

Starwood is also planning to expand its portfolio here with a new hotel in the downtown city centre under its lifestyle brand W Hotels.
