SINGAPORE — The Republic’s largest telco Singtel yesterday launched a smart home solution that allows users to remotely command their doors and appliances through a mobile phone app called True-i, developed in partnership with Hanman International.

Users, for instance, can set air-conditioning and other home appliances to turn on automatically as soon as they get home. They can also be alerted when their young children return home from school or if there is unexpected activity in the house.

With more than 88 per cent of households in Singapore wired with broadband and a smartphone penetration rate of 83 per cent, setting up a smart home is easy, Singtel said. This is done with a central smart hub that connects and communicates with more than 200 compatible smart de-vices such as smart door locks, motion sensors and cameras, which also allow for live video streaming.

“With our strengths in network and connectivity, and the wide array of smart devices that can be seamlessly connected, the possibilities that Singtel SmartHome can offer to customers are limitless … Smart homes are the homes of the future as Singapore becomes a Smart Nation,” said Mr Wong Soon Nam, vice-president of consumer products at Singtel’s Consumer Singapore.

Singapore is making a big push to become a Smart Nation and the authorities have highlighted two key trends that would help make this happen: Big data, which can be mined to provide insights into patterns including human behaviour; and the Internet of Things, where everyday devices are connected to improve the quality of life.

Singtel Fibre Broadband customers can choose from two starter kits: Starter Kit with Contact Sensor at S$25 per month on a 24-month contract, or Starter Kit with Smart Lock at S$45 a month for 24 months. Non-Singtel fibre broadband customers can purchase the starter kits at a one-time-charge of S$650 and S$1,260 respectively.
