SINGAPORE — The Hong Kong Police Force has come up an unusual hit among its souvenirs — cartoon figurines depicting paramilitary officers in green riot gear and gas masks.

The figurines, available in a sets of four or seven, come equipped with shields, weapons and loudspeakers. The seven-piece set also includes an officer displaying a black banner that reads “Warning. Tear Smoke”.

In recent weeks, Hong Kong police have used tear gas to disperse crowds of protesters during the demonstrations in Hong Kong’s central business district.

The set of four costs HK$250 (S$41) while the set of seven is priced at HK$450 (S$74).

As of today (Oct 16), both sets are listed as top-selling items on the Hong Kong Police Souvenir Gallery website, owned by Yorkview Company, the Hong Kong Police Force’s sole authorised vendor for souvenirs.

An employee told South China Morning Post that the seven-figurine set was quite popular. “Today we’ve already had 11 people buy it online,” she was quoted saying, adding that the number was unusually high.
