HONG KONG — Police have said that the current situation in Mong Kok is “on the verge of a riot”, reported the South China Morning Post (SCMP) this evening today (Oct 20).
“We are very worried about the situation in Mong Kok and consider the unlawful situation (there) to be moving towards a riot,” police spokesman Steven Hui Chun-tak was quoted as saying.
Urging for children and students to leave the site, Mr Hui was reported as saying that “radical protesters and troublemakers” tried to charge police cordon lines.
“They jeered and scolded our police officers, and incited others to charge the police cordon line to create chaos,” he said, adding that there was “no major confrontation”.
The spokesman also said that the protesters were using children as human shields — an extremely selfish and reckless behaviour.
Dozens of people were injured in two nights of clashes over the weekend in Mong Kok, including 22 police, according to the media and police. Four people were arrested for assault.
Talks between student representatives and senior city government officials are scheduled for tomorrow evening,
