Till death do us part: Chinese couples shoot wedding pictures hanging off cliff

HONG KONG — Two Chinese couples with a taste for adventure staged their wedding pictures shoot hanging from a 100-metre-high cliff in southern China ahead of Valentine’s Day, a news website reported.

The two couples – the men in suits and women in wedding dresses – scaled the cliff at the Sandaomen scenic zone in Loudi, Hunan province, on Monday (Feb 13), Chinanews.com said.

To help their adventure, the brides, however, had to give up their high-heeled shoes for flat ones suitable for climbing.

They posed for their wedding pictures hanging from the cliff on ropes.

With people across China’s biggest cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou celebrating Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, prices of roses have skyrocketed.

The flowers are now more than six times more expensive than they were last month, the Chongqing Morning Post reported.

A 25-stalk bouquet of Ecuador-imported roses were sold this week for 1,500 yuan (S$309) in Chengdu in Sichuan province, the report said.

This was in contrast to locally-grown roses that fetched four to five yuan per stalk.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated in China not only by couples but also single people.

Services coaching people on how to pursue their love interests have been doing well on the e-commerce platform Taobao.com.

About 300 people paid for the service, which costs up to 2,000 yuan.

Over in Zhengzhou in Henan province, a 28-year-old single woman spent the whole of Sunday with a hired “masked lover”, the China News Service reported.

She dined with the masked man, watched movies and visited parks with him, the report said.
