SINGAPORE — A 21-year-old Singaporean nursing student from Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) has won the gold award at the WorldSkills competition, making it the fourth consecutive win for NYP in the Health and Social Care category (previously known as the Caring category).

Ms Audrey Foo (picture), who is pursuing a nursing diploma at NYP, had to demonstrate her skills in three scenarios under a different care setting each day during the four-day competition. She also had to sit for a daily theory test in which participants needed to answer every question correctly.

“Every night, before sleeping, I read up ... to improve and I put what happened during the day behind me,” she said. “To me, the most important thing was that if you did not do well on the first day, you have to put it aside and focus on doing well the next day.”

Ms Foo, who was inspired by her mother to follow in her footsteps and become a nurse, hopes to be an Advanced Practice Nurse in the future so that she can care for patients and also “be a voice” for her fellow nurses.

The 42nd WorldSkills Competition was held last week in Leipzig, Germany, with about 1,000 competitors in 46 skills. The team from Singapore clinched three gold awards.
