50 years of design at S’pore Design Week

SINGAPORE — A permanent exhibition on half a century of Singapore design will be the headline event for the second edition of Singapore Design Week, which will run from March 10 to 22.

Commissioned by DesignSingapore Council, Fifty Years Of Singapore Design will be up at the National Design Centre. It will feature more than 200 design artefacts arranged in chronological order, from “pioneer” designers to emerging ones. There will also be a separate track for those who want to view these according to sectors such as industrial, fashion and visual communications.

“This is our contribution to celebrating Singapore’s jubilee year of independence,” said council chairperson Robert Tomlin. “It highlights the evolution of our unique Singapore design culture in the five decades since independence.”

Another exhibition to look out for will be New British Inventors: Inside Heatherwick Studio. It will showcase more than 100 works from the studio of acclaimed British designer Thomas Heatherwick who was behind the creation of the 2012 London Olympics Cauldron and Seed Cathedral, the UK Pavilion at the Expo 2010.

Singapore Design Week will also include, among others, its anchor event SingaPlural, the popular Design Trails and furniture fair Maison&Objet Asia, which debuted last year.
