Arts guide: Oct 11 to 19

DA:NS FESTIVAL 2014. The Esplanade’s annual dance festival continues. This weekend’s shows include Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake; ALPHA by Daniel Kok, Arco Renz and Eisa Jocson; Forecasting by Giuseppe Chico and Barbara Matijevic; and a showcase by NAFA students. STILL MOVING. The Singapore Art Museum’s latest exhibition is a triple-bill that focuses on photography and new media: Afterimage, a survey of South-east Asian contemporary photography in collaboration with the Singapore International Photography Festival; Time Present, a showcase of works from the Deutsche Bank Collection; and Image & Illusion, a small selection of video works from the Yokohama Museum Of Art. LIQUID ARCHITECTURE SINGAPORE 2014. The established sound art even tin Australia makes its way to Singapore for the first time and comprises a series of lectures, peformances, presentations, a sound installation and a discussion on the theme The Ear Is A Brain: Sound Beyond Sound. SINGAPORE INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL 2014. The biennial event is back, feature more than 800 works at a handful of exhibitions at various venues including the new DECK space at Prinsep Street and ArtScience Museum. Its anchor show, the Open Call Showcase, comprises 47 photography portfolios from 23 countries. Until Nov 11 at various places including DECK at 51 Prinsep Street. ROOTS. As part of its 15th anniversary season, The Finger Players stages restages this one-man show by Oliver Chong about a man’s search for his roots. Oct 16 to 26, 8pm, Drama Centre Black Box. With 3pm Saturday matinees. Tickets at S$35 from SISTIC. In Mandarin with English surtitles.

PRISCILLA — QUEEN OF THE DESERT. The popular musical based on the 1994 film about drag queens who go on a glamorous adventure inside their lovely bus, Priscilla. Oct 16 to 26 at Resorts World Theatre, Resorts World Sentosa. Tickets from S$48 at SISTIC.

COFFEE & CONVERSATIONS: ENTANG WIHARSO. The Indonesian artist is in Singapore for an artist residency at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute. Visitors are welcome to drop by in a casual talk where he discusses his practice and his experiences during his ongoing residency. Oct 11, 3.30pm, Singapore Tyler Print Institute. Free admission.

JERUSALEM. The Stage Club presents Jez Butterworth’s West End and Broadway-staged play about an outlaw and the erosion of English country life. Oct 15 to 18, 7.30pm, DBS Arts Centre — Home of SRT. Tickets at S$37 and S$42 from SISTIC.

BIJI MATA MAK (MOTHER’S PET). Gunung Sayang Association presents this 25-year-old Peranakan piece about the trials and tribulations of Bibik Bong Neo as she brings up her adopted son Freddy. Oct 17 and 18, 8pm, Drama Centre Theatre. With a 2pm Saturday matinee. Tickets from S$48 at SISTIC.

PASCAL GALLET MASTERCLASS & CONCERT. Considered one of the greatest pianists of this generation, the French musician is in town to hold a concert featuring works by 20th century French composers Andre Jolivet and Olivier Messiaen as well as contemporary Chinese composer Wen Deqing. He will also hold masterclasses. Concert is on Oct 13, 5.30pm, Lee Foundation Theatre, NAFA Campus 3, 151 Bencoolen Street. Tickets at S$15 at the door. DECIMAL POINTS 0. The latest show in Cake Theatrical Productions’ experimental series will be helmed by lighting designer Andy Lim and will look at the theme of Love. THE VOYAGE OF CONTINENTS. A group show organised by Mandala Fine Art featuring four artists: Pham An Hai (Vietnam), Romina Arcaute (USA), Bojidar Dimitrov (Bulgaria) and Erina Tamrakar (Nepal). Until Oct 13 at Art Seasons, 1 Selegie Road, #02-021/24, POMO. Free admission.

SALUSUAH VER 3.0. Orangedot Productions and The Arts House present this restaging of Salusuah, a monologue by Gani Karim about a man’s search for identity in a multi-cultural environment. CREATIONS 2014 — REQUIEM. Maya Dance Theatre’s annual Creations series features the works choreographers Dr Sun Ock Lee and Janis Brenner, with theatre director Jeremiah Choy (Singapore) and emerging choreographer Kenneth Tan. ARTIFICIAL LOVE. A solo show by Singaporean artist Guo Yixiu, which comprises a new series of photographic composites highlighting iconic local monuments as well as an installation. Presented in collaboration with Galerie Sogan & Art. Until Oct 24 at OCBC Art Space, OCBC Centre, 65 Chulia Street.

DISAPPEARANCE AND FORMATION. Japanese artist Shinji Ohmaki continues his Echoes-Crystallisation series comprising images of floral motifs, this time incorporating the traditional Filipino ensemble of the barong and saya. PUNK+: A PHOTO EXHIBITION BY SHEILA ROCK. Presented by agnes b, this exhibition features the works of photographer Rock hwo has worked with some of the most world’s most iconic artists. Until Oct 26, noon to 9pm, The Substation Gallery.

THE REIGN OF QUANTITY. British artist Peter Peri’s first solo show in Singapore features new paintings that elaborate on French writer Rene Guenon’s explanation of the Taoist conception of the three dimensional right-angled cross. Here, a single marker pen colour becomes the subject of each painting that builds up into parallel lines that cover the length of the canvas. AD HOC. A group show that explores current issues in contemporary society through prints, paintings and drawings. Artists include Maryanto, Antoine L’Heureux, Xue Mu, Haruki Ogawa, Ian Woo. SPIRITUALITY OF BEDAYA. Master Indonesian artist Srihadi Soedarsono’s first solo show in Singapore features seven new oil paintings and a selection of watercolour paintings dating from the 1948 to the present. ENDLESS, NAMELESS (CONSTRUCTIONS). Japanese artist Teppei Kaneuji presents 80 new artworks based on the local landscape after a six-week residency here. Until Oct 25 at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute, Robertson Quay. Free admission.

COUNTERSHADOWS (TACTICS IN EVASION). This group exhibition looks at works of art characterised by evasive concepts and tactics. Curated by Melanie Pocock, it features artists Heman Chong, Tamares Goh, Ho Rui An, Sai Hua Kuan, Jeremy Sharma, Tan Peiling, Robert Zhao Renhui (The Institute of Critical Zoologists). RE/CALL/RE/FORM/RE/MASTER. A group show of South-east Asian artists that explores how creative reuse produces strong emotions. THE FLEETING WORLD OF DAPUNTA HYANG. Zai Kuning transforms the gallery into a space for exchange, experiments and performances, moving from video and film to writing and musical composition. It’s part of the artist’s ongoing research into Mak Yong opera and the Riau Archipelago, and done in collaboration with students and school staff. THEATRICAL FIELDS. The latest exhibition at the CCA looks at artistic practices that use theatricality in performance, film and video. It coincides with the ongoing Singapore International Festival Of Arts and will feature major video installations by Judith Barry, Stan Douglas, Joan Jonas, Isaac Julien and Constanze Ruhm.
