Arts guide: Sept 20 to 28

GITANJALI [I FEEL THE EARTH MOVE]. The Necessary Stage takes on Nobel Prize-winning poet Tagore and Indian classical dance in this story involving an old dance teacher, her reluctant son and a promising dance student. Directed by Alvin Tan, written by Haresh Sharma and featuring Ole Khamchanla, Jereh Leong, Raka Maitra, Ebi Shankara, Sharda Harrison and Padma Sagaram. Sept 26 to 28, 8pm and 3pm, at SOTA Drama Theatre. Tickets from S$25 to S$45 at SISTIC. In English and Tamil with English subtitles.

COUNTERSHADOWS (TACTICS IN EVASION). This group exhibition looks at works of art characterised by evasive concepts and tactics. Curated by Melanie Pocock, it features artists Heman Chong, Tamares Goh, Ho Rui An, Sai Hua Kuan, Jeremy Sharma, Tan Peiling, Robert Zhao Renhui (The Institute of Critical Zoologists). BOTH SIDES, NOW. An immersive arts experience in Khatib and Toa Payoh that looks at issues of life and death presented by Drama Box and ArtsWork. It includes, among others, a puppet performance and a forum theatre piece. MEDEA. Under The Substation’s Directors’ Lab, Tan Shou Chen directs this production based on Euripedes’ Medea, in collaboration with Benjamin Lim Yi, Irfan Kasban and Ruby Jayaseelan. Performed by Ruby Jayaseelan, Chad O’Brien, Farah Ong and Jo Tan. Sept 26 and 27, 8pm, The Substation Theatre. With a 3pm Saturday matinee. RE/CALL/RE/FORM/RE/MASTER. A group show of South-east Asian artists that explores how creative reuse produces strong emotions. Curated by Jason Wee, it features Bani Haykal, Nipan Oranniwesna, Prilla Tania, Vanessa Ban and Vincent Leong. Until Oct 12, noon to 7pm, Silverlens, Gillman Barracks, 47 Malan Road, #01-25. THE FLEETING WORLD OF DAPUNTA HYANG. Zai Kuning transforms the gallery into a space for exchange, experiments and performances, moving from video and film to writing and musical composition. It’s part of the artist’s ongoing research into Mak Yong opera and the Riau Archipelago, and done in collaboration with students and school staff. ENDLESS, NAMELESS (CONSTRUCTIONS). Japanese artist Teppei Kaneuji presents 80 new artworks based on the local landscape after a six-week residency here. Sept 20 to Oct 25 at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute, Robertson Quay. Free admission.

HOLIDAY IN MY HEAD. New Singaporean company Asylum Theatre makes its debut with this eight-in-one production of plays written and directed by Dean Lundquist, all of which centre on or mention Christmas. SEPTFEST 2014. The Substation is celebrating its 24th anniversary primarily with a fundraising exhibition for its art gallery. Over 40 works have been donated by artists and the art centre hopes to raise S$30,000. Until Sept 27, noon to 9pm, The Substation Gallery. Silent auctions will be held on Sept 13 and Sept 27.

AFFORDABLE ART FAIR SINGAPORE’S YOUNG TALENT PROGRAMME 2013/14 WINNERS EXHIBITION. Affordable Art Fair Singapore and ION Art Gallery team up to showcase the winners of last year’s Young Talent Programme at the fair. INSPIRED BY LIGHT — A TRAVELLER’S JOURNAL A selection of new paintings by watercolour artist Dr Winston Oh. Proceeds of sales of works will go towards supporting the Faculty of Fine Arts programmes. TIME AND HISTORY: DRAWINGS REVOLVING AROUND TIME. Vertical Submarine’s Joshua Yang’s latest solo show revisits the idea of drawing lines as a measure or experience of time, interpreting the nine concepts of time in philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s Time And History. THEATRICAL FIELDS. The latest exhibition at the CCA looks at artistic practices that use theatricality in performance, film and video. It coincides with the ongoing Singapore International Festival Of Arts and will feature major video installations by Judith Barry, Stan Douglas, Joan Jonas, Isaac Julien and Constanze Ruhm.
