SINGAPORE — British comedian Jimmy Carr is coming to town for the first time, performing his comedy show Funny Business at the University Cultural Centre Hall, National University of Singapore on Aug 27.
No topic is too taboo for Carr, whose career is not without controversy. In 2009, he cracked a joke about British amputee soldiers who returned to Britain (“Say what you like ... but we’re going to have a f***ing good Paralympic team in 2012”) that caused a furore. (He later said: “I’m sorry if anyone was offended, but that’s the kind of comedy I do.”)
In 2012, Carr’s involvement in an alleged K2 tax avoidance scheme came to light, but he has since pulled out of the scheme, apologising for “a terrible error of judgement”. As if proving that there is no such thing as bad publicity, viewing figures of the episode of 8 Out Of 10 Cats, recorded on the day of his apology and broadcast the following day, almost doubled compared with the previous week.
Carr’s show in Singapore is the latest in a string of shows by LA Comedy LIVE in recent years, which has staged shows by the likes of John Cleese, Michael McIntyre, Chris Tucker, Dylan Moran, Margaret Cho, Bill Bailey, Bill Burr and Rob Schneider.
“Come for the witty and incisive musings on the human condition,” LA Comedy LIVE said in their media release. “Stay for the knob gags,”
You have been warned.
Jimmy Carr will perform on Aug 27, 7pm at University Cultural Centre Hall, National University of Singapore. Tickets goes on sale May 12 from SISTIC.
