4 art fairs to check out this month

SINGAPORE — Last month’s Milan Image Art & Design Fair signalled the start of the year-end art fair madness that descends upon Singapore. In fact, three are taking place simultaneously next week followed by another the week after. So if you’re on the hunt for a piece or two, or want to check out some quality works, you are definitely spoilt for choice. Or at least, have your fill before the biggest of the lot, Art Stage Singapore, takes place in January.

1. AFFORDABLE ART FAIR. From being the new kid in town a few years ago, this is now a permanent fixture on our arts calendar. Everyone knows the drill: Quality works with prices ranging from S$100 to S$10,000 — of which three quarters are priced below S$7,500. You’ve got 102 galleries from Singapore and beyond showcasing about 800 artists across all kinds of art. At this point, organisers need only to tweak a few things: They’ve firmed up the popular Under S$1,000 Wall, which is more tightly curated. They have various workshops and a live painting performance from Instinc Gallery. The works of Penang’s most famous mural artist, Ernest Zacharevic, will also be around somewhere. Nov 20 to 23 at the F1 Pit Building, 1 Republic Boulevard. Tickets from S$12 at SISTIC. For more info, visit http://www.affordableartfair.com/singapore.

2. BANK ART FAIR. After Art Apart Fair, here is another one held in hotel rooms. Organised by Korea’s Art People Art Company and first held in Hong Kong last year, this second edition will take place at Pan Pacific Hotel. About 50 galleries are set to participate and founder Tomy Kim has mentioned a preference for new galleries and young artists. Prices range from US$1,000 (S$1,290) to US$10,000. Nov 20 to 23 at Pan Pacific Hotel, 7 Raffles Blvd, Marina Square. For more information, visit http://www.bankartfair.com.

3. SPOT ART. This second edition is focused on the region’s emerging — and even undiscovered — talents below the age of 30. More than 150 works from 48 artists representing 12 countries are priced between S$500 and S$6,000. These are high-quality works too: It has collaborated with 25 art universities and institutions in the region, and the selection committee includes some respected curators in the Asian art scene, including former Singapore Biennale curator Joselina Cruz, artist Milenko Prvacki and curator Iola Lenzi. Nov 21 to 25, 11am to 7pm, ARTrium@MCI, 140 Hill Street. Free admission. For more info, visit http://www.spotart.sg.

4. SINGAPORE ART FAIR. If you’re interested not only in regional and South Asian art, but also Middle Eastern and North African art, this could be worth exploring. It is, after all, the first international edition of the Beirut Art Fair. Its inaugural Singapore edition will have about 59 exhibitors featuring 230 artists. There will be pavilions dedicated to the aforementioned regions, Lebanon and the late Malaysian artist Ibrahim Hussein. There will also be large-scale sculptures and installations by 10 artists. Nov 27 to 30, noon to 7pm, Hall 401-403, Suntec Convention Centre, Suntec City. Tickets at S$20 (S$40 for a season pass). For more info, visit http://www.singapore-art-fair.com.
