How you can enjoy a cup of java and get inspired by poetry

SINGAPORE — If you’ve always wanted to dabble in poetry, here’s your chance to learn from one of Singapore’s finest writers.

SINGAPORE — If you’ve always wanted to dabble in poetry, here’s your chance to learn from one of Singapore’s finest writers.

Local poet Marc Nair will be hosting the second edition of the Costa Coffee With series on Feb 20, at the Costa Coffee outlet at Raffles City Shopping Centre.

During the session, Nair will perform an excerpt from his upcoming book Spomenik, as well as teach budding writers how to further hone their craft.

Nair, who has just returned from a trip to London as part of the Costa Cultural Exchange programme, a five-day immersive literary experience, will also share some notes from his experience.

“In the last 10 years, the literary scene in Singapore has exploded but there is still much room for growth, especially in attracting and sustaining new audiences,” said Nair.

“Part of this growth comes in reminding ourselves of the power of words,” he continued. “For example, poetry helps us to capture moments in our lives, giving others a window into our world. Some of us may have started writing in various forms, but often the challenge comes when ‘real’ life takes over.

“I want to help people discover or rediscover their inner poets.”

The first edition of Costa Coffee With was hosted by Singaporean singer Gentle Bones, but you don’t only get poetry or music at these sessions. Costa’s Barista Maestros will also run specially curated master classes, to give coffee lovers a glimpse into the art of making and appreciating handcrafted coffee. Hon Jing Yi

Costa Coffee With Marc Nair will be held on Feb 20, 3pm to 5pm, at Costa Coffee, Raffles City Shopping Centre. Admission is free, but pre-registration is required at http://facebook.com/costacoffeesingapore.
