SINGAPORE — Renowned French cabaret troupe Moulin Rouge is set to perform in the Republic, for the first time.

It will entertain at a gala dinner tomorrow night (March 7), which gathers the French community to celebrate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee.

Exquisite feathers, rhinestones and sequins are just part of the allure. Fifteen of the 80 dancers from the troupe will put up delightful numbers featuring original choreography, music and of course, lots of acrobatic feats.

The show, aptly called A Taste of Moulin Rouge, will project the facade and red windmill of the famous cabaret, which opened in Paris in the 1880s.

Its artistic director said the performance will be as close to the original as it can get.

Said Ms Janet Pharaoh, Moulin Rouge’s Artistic Director: “Of course it was quite risque at the time, because they started to lift up their skirts and show their ankles. And they also created a lot of steps that had a little wink at the political situation at the time. Of course, you had movements like opening the bottle, making the mayonnaise. All the steps have little names. And you had these big parties happening.”

The French community and organisations will gather at the event to celebrate the friendship between France and Singapore and will be sending their best wishes to the nation for its 50th birthday. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
