SINGAPORE – Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) is staging Mulan The Musical, an all new Singaporean adaptation of the sold-out Taiwanese production.

The musical tells the classic tale of Hua Mulan who disguises herself as a man to enlist in the army in her father’s place, and will star Taiwanese singers Li Chien-Na and Lai Ying Ying in the titular role, and Mandopop star Chou Ting-Wei as the General, or Mulan’s love interest. Singaporean stars Pierre Png and Ann Kok will also feature in the musical comedy as the army’s company sergeant major and Mulan’s pregnant older sister Mulian respectively.

“I’m truly excited to be involved in Mulan The Musical. I’ve always wanted to do musicals, and because this musical is in mandarin – I just know I’m going to have so much fun!” said Png.

“I feel very honoured to be a part of Mulan The Musical, a brand new Singapore adaptation of a famous musical from Taiwan. I am excited to bring a different kind of performance to everyone and I hope the audience will like it,” said Kok.

Mulan The Musical is helmed by director Lu Po-Shen, the artistic director of Tainaner Ensemble, known in Taiwan for its cutting-edge and experimental theatrical style. Music producer Wang Hsi-Wen will oversee the front-to-end music production, song-writing and orchestration for the musical.

The Singaporean edition of Mulan The Musical will also include new scenes and songs not previously seen in the Taiwanese edition.

“Mulan the Musical will be the first ever Mandarin musical to be staged in Singapore that re-tells the evergreen story of the filial and courageous young lady who braved all odds to defend her country. This time, however, audiences can expect to be treated to a military pandemonium and romantic hysteria as our favourite Mulan becomes entangled in a gender-bending comedy of errors and mistaken identities. It will be a delightfully funny show interspersed with unexpected comedic timings, catchy tunes, emotive singing and colourful characters played by popular industry veterans both from Singapore and Taiwan,” said Khoo Shao Tze, Vice President for Resort Sales and Entertainment at RWS.

Mulan The Musical will premiere on Dec 16 (Friday) and run until Feb 5 (Sunday) at Resorts World Theatre, Resorts World Sentosa. Tickets from S$38 to S$128 available at SISTIC.
