Shakes on a train

Singapore — An actor posing as Shakespeare was seen mingling around a hawker centre and inside an MRT train yesterday. It was courtesy of Singapore Repertory Theatre’s celebration of the Bard’s 450th birthday, as well as to promote their show The Merchant Of Venice at Fort Canning Park next week.

But The Reduced Shakespeare Company took things to new heights.Under the title Shakes On A Plane, the group performed a range of Shakespeare’s works in front of a captive audience on a flight from Gatwick, West Sussex, to Verona, Italy, yesterday.

They began with a 12-minute performance of Romeo and Juliet, using the length of the plane as their stage.

As well as quick costume and wig changes, which were made in between the seats, the actors used props including a shark puppet, a severed hand and plastic swords. AGENCIES
