SINGAPORE - A new exhibition to celebrate Singapore’s Golden Jubilee was launched today (Aug 3) at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM).

Titled Unearthed: Singapore At 25, the exhibition features 50 objects specially selected from the 111 items that were kept in the Singapore 2015 Time Capsule, which was unearthed last December.

“The items from this time capsule are particularly interesting as we celebrate our 50th year of independence,” said Rosa Daniel, chief executive officer of National Heritage Board. “We are revealing some of the best among the 111 to be exhibited which are most reflective of our progress.”

Maria Khoo Joseph, assistant curator at the ACM, said the 50 items selected were based on the six themes used for the 111 objects: Education, defense, economy, society, infrastructure and politics. “We tried to make sure there were representations of the six themese and we chose the best and most displayable objects,” she added.

Among these 50 items on display are the first National Service Call-Up Notice; the first currency series; a photograph of Singapore’s most famous orang utan, Ah Meng; a set of Singapore Telecom scenery phonecards; the Sing Singapore ’90 songbook with CDs and cassettes; and a Yeo Hiap Seng soya bean drink can.

Minister of Education and chairman of the SG50 Steering Committee, Heng Swee Keat, who launched the exhibition this morning, also took the opportunity to announce another time capsule for SG50.

“Looking at the objects buried 25 years ago shows issues that were important and our hopes for our future. It allows us to better appreciate our progress as a nation,” he said. “We are going to have another time capsule that will be opened in 50 years’ time.”

The public can suggest what objects ought to be placed in this new time capsule, which will be solicited in two months’ time. The minister said the location to bury the new time capsule hasn’t been fixed yet, but it will be “somewhere meaningful”.

Unearthed: Singapore At 25 will run until Sept 27 at the ACM. All NHB museums and institutions will be opened with free admission over the jubilee weekend from August 7 to 10.
