State of the Arts: Oct 10 to 17
SINGAPORE — The nation’s top arts awards were bestowed at a ceremony held yesterday. The Cultural Medallion was given to playwright Haresh Sharma, musician Margaret Leng Tan, painter Chua Mia Tee and writer Lin Gao, while seven artists were given the Young Artist Award: Composer Diana Soh, film-maker Kirsten Tan, multi-disciplinary artist Loo Zihan, musician Riduan Zalani, lighting designer James Tan, and artist-twins Chun Kai Feng and Chun Kai Qun. Another Cultural Medallion recipient, Lim Tze Peng, celebrated his 95th birthday with a solo exhibition. Dance was also in full swing this week: da:ns festival featured French superstar Sylvie Guillem in her final performance as a dancer, the National Arts Council’s Got To Move is still on and a conference by the World Dance Alliance was also on. Finally, organisers of the Joseph Balestier Award for the Freedom of Art also announced that it will raise the prize money to S$20,000 for next year. MAYO MARTIN
