State of the Arts: Dec 6 to 13

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth released its annual Cultural Statistics report, noting, among others, a record number of museum visitors, a strong audience for community arts and a growing trend among young people open to the arts as a career. Elsewhere, iconic theatre personalities Dim Sum Dollies received their first Advisory 16 rating — as well as the licence — for the sociopolitical themes in its History of Singapore Part 2 show only a few days before it opened. The 10-day BookFest@Singapore 2014 also kicked off. Two festivals are set to wrap up this weekend: The M1 Contact contemporary dance festival and the 25th Singapore International Film Festival. the film scene was in full spotlight this week: MCCY Minister Lawrence Wong pointed out that 24 Singapore films will be out next year — double the average annual output. A few of these were announced over the week, including Jack Neo’s Long Long Time Ago and Royston Tan’s 3688. Eric Khoo revealed French actress Juliette Binoche will have a cameo in his segment in the anthology film 7 Letters, while former politician Nicole Seah was reported to have a role in Randy Ang’s 1965. Finally, Anthony Chen announced his new film company Giraffe Pictures. MAYO MARTIN
