State of Arts: Jan 3 to 10

SINGAPORE — The nominees for the inaugural Joseph Balestier Award for the Freedom of Art, jointly given by Art Stage Singapore and the United States Embassy in Singapore, were announced. Among the seven regional artists named was Singapore’s Lee Wen. The first round of the finals for the inaugural Singapore Violin International Competition kicked off. The School of the Arts announced its 2014 cohort did well, with a 100 per cent diploma pass rate for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Elsewhere, there were two resignations: At the end of the month, veteran media expert Woon Tai Ho will step down as media and marketing director of the National Gallery Singapore, while The Arts House director, William Phuan, is set to do the same.
