SINGAPORE — For the first time in its 12-year history, The Esplanade announced that it had incurred an operating deficit, with a loss of S$2.3 million and a drop in sponsorship and donations, as well as venue rentals, as some of the factors. Meanwhile, The Substation started its search for a new artistic director after current director Noor Effendy Ibrahim announced that he would be stepping down in January after a five-year tenure. Meanwhile, The Films Appeal Committee upheld the Media Development Authority’s decision to classify the documentary To Singapore, With Love as Not Allowed For All Ratings after hearing the appeal lodged by film-maker Tan Pin Pin. The Singapore Writers Festival wrapped up, but two more kicked off: The Singapore Art Book Fair and the Singapore Alternative Art and Book Festival. On the theatre front, The Necessary Stage’s resident playwright Haresh Sharma bagged the annual South-east Asia Write Award for Singapore and it was revealed that Singaporean Damon Chua’s play Film Chinois is set to debut off-off-Broadway next year. The Prudential Eye Awards 2015 shortlist was announced. It was also busy on the dance front with shows by Frontier Danceland and Re:Dance Theatre, as well as the annual showcase by SOTA dance students and a dance-meets-music show featuring Singapore Dance Theatre members. Finally, big shows such as the APB Foundation Signature Art Prize, Da Vinci exhibitions, Mamma Mia! and A Midsummer’s Night Dream opened. MAYO MARTIN
