SINGAPORE — As part of her new role as the humanitarian organisation’s goodwill ambassador, television personality Belinda Lee hosted her first dialogue session, Saving Our Girls, where she interviewed a World Vision registered young woman from Ethiopia, 16-year-old Gizework, who spoke of the challenges of raising awareness for gender equality.

“It has always been in my heart to make a difference in someone’s life, especially after all my years of travelling,” said Lee.

This passion to help others stems from a deeply personal experience. “While I was going through a rough time suffering from depression, I was in Mongolia and met this girl suffering from cancer,” she explained. “Her smile and her spirit were so bright that I was ashamed! I told myself, ‘Belinda Lee, you have to wake up and be strong — go out there and make a difference in someone else’s life’.”

She added: “The smiles of the poor and the sick have lifted my spirits and now it is my turn to lift theirs. I’m overwhelmed with emotions right now — this is not Belinda Lee the artiste, this is Belinda Lee, who will commit (herself) to making a difference.”

Currently, Lee sponsors two children under the World Vision Sponsor A Child Programme. “I don’t have children (of my own) so I’m very excited!”

She will be visiting one of her sponsored children in Nepal this October. She also hopes this chain of goodwill continues. “I hope this sponsored child of mine will one day grow up to be a sponsor to some other children out there in the world,” said Lee.
