SINGAPORE — Celebrity couple Joanne Peh and Qi Yuwu’s marriage on Tuesday caught everyone by surprise, but if the buzz on social media is anything to go by, it has received a thumbs-up from everyone.

Celebrity friends were also quick to congratulate the newlyweds, who held a solemnisation ceremony at Sentosa’s Movenpick Heritage Hotel at a low-key event attended by the couple’s relatives and close family friends from Singapore and Guangzhou. The hush-hush affair leaked through Instagram, after celebrity hairstylist and friend David Gan posted photos of them in front of the Merlion statue.

The intimate event was in stark contrast to the star-studded celebrity wedding between Yvonne Lim and Alex Tien last Saturday.

MediaCorp actress Priscelia Chan admitted that she was one of those who were caught off guard. “I’m very surprised, but at the same time, I’m not very surprised that it was a private affair. I’ve known Yuwu since our Star Search days and (he is) someone who would do something like that. I don’t think it (the wedding) was meant to surprise anyone, but more of the couple’s own characteristics to want it really private.”

“Real love should be admired and respected anywhere, so if it’s real love, it should be congratulated,” added actor Elvin Ng, who co-starred with the couple on the television series C.L.I.F.

The couple, who have been friends and colleagues for more than a decade and have worked together on various dramas, went public with their relationship last year.

“While their filming schedules and work commitments have been a challenge for them to spend time together, both have travelled to be with each other whenever possible — Joanne flying to Beijing and Qi to Kuala Lumpur,” said a statement released by MediaCorp’s Artiste Management Division, which added that wedding celebrations are slated to be held next year.

Peh has been in KL shooting a new MediaCorp drama series titled Mind Games, while filming for Qi’s latest project, the Daniel Yun-produced local movie 1965, starts in November. Laetitia Wong
