LOS ANGELES — Thelma & Louise are back: Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon will receive the Women in Motion award from Kering and the Cannes Film Festival, it was annouced on Friday (May 6).
The Academy Award-winning actresses are being honoured for their contributions to the movie industry and the women’s cause as part of a programme that aims to support female professionals in the film business.
The Thelma & Louise stars, who are celebrating the cult hit’s 25th anniversary, will be honoured at Cannes’ “presidential dinner” on May 15. The Ridley Scott classic screened at the 1991 edition of the fest.
The duo with receive the award from Cannes President Pierre Lescure, Cannes General Delegate Thierry Fremaux and Kering Chairman-CEO Francois-Henri Pinault.
Davis is founder and chair of the non-profit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, which researches the imbalance of female characters on-screen and behind the camera. Sarandon is a human rights activist involved with various non-profits and organisations worldwide.
The actresses have also chosen the winners of the second Women in Motion award in support of young talents. The recipients will be unveiled soon.
This is the second edition of the prize. Last year, it was given to veteran actress Jane Fonda and producer Megan Ellison. REUTERS
