SINGAPORE — Photographer Hong Chee Yan is clicking away inside the studio as actress Jesseca Liu poses effortlessly for his camera. It’s taking a while to get the perfect photo, but styleXstyle’s Style Star for the month of May remains unfazed.

“Tilt your chin down a little more… Yes, this is what we’re looking for,” stylist Li Rong exclaimed as Chee Yan gets a winning shot. Liu thanks the team, and promptly gets up to change out of her ivory Toni Maticevski dress for our chat.

MINIMALIST CHIC

The Malaysian-born, Singapore-based actress returns in her off-duty ensemble of slouchy white tee, soft blue jeans and Adidas sneakers. “I have a soft spot for minimalist pieces,” reveals the 1.72m tall beauty. “In fact, I used to be a tomboy. I had long hair in college, but I never liked skirts. I would wear baggy tees with knee-length berms,” she said with a laugh. “Now, things have changed. You know androgynous, minimalist-chic get-ups like Japanese-American model Kiko Mizuhara’s? I quite like them now.”

It seems like the 37-year-old favours the fair, porcelain complexion of Japanese ladies, too. “I’ve had tanned skin as a young girl in Langkawi, thanks to my years in track and field,” she reminisced. “I now prefer fairer skin, however. Ever since I’ve entered the industry, I’ve realised just how important sunscreen is.” To maintain her flawless visage, the Estetica ambassador goes for regular treatments at the beauty-salon chain. “I’m lucky to be able to try out all the different treatments, and I love how my skin feels pampered and nourished after each session,” she gushed.

ON A ROLE

Soft-spoken and gentle in person, it’s hard not to take a liking to the HIM International Music artiste. Her recent Top 10 Female Artistes win at the Star Awards last month was a fitting testament to her status as a television darling. “I am very thankful (for my win). Considering how I haven’t been involved much in the past couple of years, I’m glad to have been a part of Star Awards 2016.”

Looking back, her favourite TV role to date has been playing divorce lawyer/femme fatale/vigilante Guan Xin in the Channel 8 drama Revenge Queen early this year.

“There was room for creativity in playing Guan Xin, and it was interesting to explore the minds of women… I really appreciated that.”

NEW VENTURES

Can’t wait to see more of her? This month, filming commences for the Channel 8 drama Hero 8, where Liu and Shaun Chen are set to play a couple. And aside from her acting gigs, the hardworking lady is set to venture into scriptwriting. “I’m taking lessons now, and I hope to be able to write my own romance feature film in the near future,” Jesseca beamed. “And who knows, I might be able to become a director of a drama series in time to come. It won’t be easy, and I will have to work hard for that chance.” You go, girl. STYLEXSTYLE
