Ellie Goulding: ‘I’ll try to avoid writing about love’

SINGAPORE — British singer Ellie Goulding has been wowing audiences worldwide with her stunning performances — both on TV with her Saturday Night Live gig; and on stage, as her fans who saw her performance at the Esplanade last year can attest to.

Goulding said she had “an incredible experience” in Singapore. “It’s such a pity I haven’t had the chance to experience the real Singapore,” she said over the phone. “I have such an amazing fan base there. Perhaps next time!”

Her next time happens to be June 13, when Goulding takes to the stage at the Star Theatre. And, yes, she will be singing all her hits, including Burn and I Need Your Love. Still, when asked to pick her favourite track from her catalogue, Goulding opted for My Blood (off Halcyon Days).

“I just think that it’s my heartfelt song and I feel very attached to the song. I love everything about it: Performing it, the melody and the chorus,” said the 27-year-old. “It’s a song that expresses what I feel, that I just can’t express in real life.”

The other reason that Goulding has also been in the public eye is because she has been seen with some prominent figures in showbiz, including electro diehard Skrillex, British actor Jeremy Irvine and now, McFly’s singer Dougie Poynter.

Goulding surmised that it may be her immense commitment to her relationships that may have acted as a double-edged sword. “I think that in the past, I’ve somehow ended up being in relationships that I’ve given my absolute all. I’ve even put them before my career. Being an extremely passionate and loving person, I’d literally give them my all, my everything.”

She added: “I think with relationships ending, trying to get yourself out of tunnel vision and getting yourself to stay in the moment as much as possible is important. Occupy your mind and stop thinking back on past thoughts, or what may happen in the future. Remain in the present, be happy to be alive and healthy. You’ll get over it!”

One person who’s occupying her mind at the moment is McFly vocalist Dougie Poynter, she said, adding that he impassions her with her love for music, and “it’s great that we have such similar music interests”. “I’m drawn to people that I can associate with and talk about what I do, things that I’m passionate about.”

But don’t expect relationships to be on the menu for her third album. “I want it to be more about other things, and although I do write a lot about relationships, I like writing about the world and the things that I see as well,” she said. “I’ll try to avoid writing about love at all costs!”

Electro music will still be featured, though. Goulding said she was influenced by artistes such as The Prodigy and Moby, and that they are the reason she’s always been interested in electro music.

“However, I could even consider writing and singing songs for another genre. I wouldn’t mind. Or maybe even delve into acting if I weren’t so busy,” she said.

But fans will have to wait a while for the third album. Goulding’s last studio contributions were for the soundtrack of Divergent (she offered three songs, Beating Heart, Hanging On and Dead In The Water), but she’s busy with her 2014 spring tour and felt she had to “rest for a bit”. Nevertheless, she is going to bring it on when she lands here next month. “I really can’t wait to be with you all soon!” Laetitia Wong

Ellie Goulding performs on June 13, 8pm at the Star Theatre. Tickets from SISTIC.
