Hong Kong celebs pick the best Mother’s Day spots in the city

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, but you’ve already taken your mum to every single place in Singapore to celebrate. So, head overseas instead. And if there is one thing we know about mothers, it’s that they love Hong Kong. (Just ask your mum.)

Mother’s Day is fast approaching, but you’ve already taken your mum to every single place in Singapore to celebrate. So, head overseas instead. And if there is one thing we know about mothers, it’s that they love Hong Kong. (Just ask your mum.)

Perhaps it’s the excellent dim sum or the streets dedicated to selling a wide variety of leather goods, or the knowledge that there is a very slight chance she might bump into Chow Yun Fatt ... there’s something about Hong Kong that tickles their fancy. As it turns out, even our favourite Hong Kong stars don’t mind braving the paparazzi every once in a while to give their mummies a treat in the city. We asked four of them, who will be performing in Singapore at a Mother’s Day concert on May 10 and a Father’s Day Concert on June 20, for their suggestions.

KEVIN CHENG: TREAT HER TO HER FAVE CUISINE

When he was little, Kevin Cheng, who started out as a singer but later found success acting in TV dramas such as Ghetto Justice and Scarlet Heart, Mother’s Day was an occasion when he would go the extra mile — sometimes literally — for mum. “Once, when I was about eight years old, I ran for 10 minutes from home to this ice cream stand near my home to buy ice cream for my mother,” he said. “I bought two cups and ran all the way home. But it was in the summer, so by the time I reached home, the ice cream had melted. I burst into tears! My mother laughed at me. Now, I don’t do many cute things. I was much cuter then.”

HE RECOMMENDS: “My mother loves to eat, so I take her out to eat on Mother’s Day. She is also very picky — she only wants to eat very, very good food. That is why we always go to the same few restaurants, because we know they are reliable. For Chinese food, I take her to this restaurant in Mid-Levels, but I can’t tell you where, because not many people know of this place! We also often go to Jin Luo Bao Korean restaurant in Causeway Bay, opposite Sogo.”

SUSANNA KWAN: SHOWER HER WITH TRADITIONAL GIFTS

Actress Susanna Kwan, who will be performing in Singapore with acclaimed songwriter Dr Joseph Koo, as well as Hong Kong stars Adam Cheng, Gallen Lo, Johnny Yip and Teresa Cheung at the Dr. Koo Glorious Concert on June 20, said her family didn’t quite celebrate Mother’s Day per se when she was little. “But our whole family would go out for dinner,” she added. “Sometimes, we would also buy presents for her. My mother was from the older generation, so she didn’t like to receive flowers because they would be very expensive on Mother’s Day. We usually bought her food or gave her red packets. But in the end, she would give all the money back to us.”

SHE RECOMMENDS: “Mothers all love to shop and Hong Kong’s Sheung Wan area has great quality dried foods, like dried mushrooms and dried scallops, as well as Chinese sausage and cured duck. Mothers also love Koi Kei — you can buy sweets, peanut candies, crunchy egg rolls and barbecued meats there. They have enormous stores in Hong Kong, so you feel very happy when you walk in. They have everything!”

BENNY CHAN: YUM CHA WITH MUM

For actor/singer Benny Chan, best known for his roles in Demi-Gods And Semi-Devils, Journey To The West II and Gods Of Honour, Mother’s Day usually means having a dim sum treat. “In Hong Kong, it’s quite common for children to take their parents for yum cha on Mother’s Day. After yum cha, I take my mother shopping — especially if I haven’t already bought her a gift. She usually says she doesn’t need anything, but like all mothers, if you actually give her something she won’t reject it!”

HE RECOMMENDS: “If you want to splurge, visit the Dragon King Restaurant at the World Trade Centre. The dim sum there is delicious. For a more affordable option, I would recommend the Tao Heung group of restaurants.”

MYOLIE WU: SIMPLY SPEND TIME WITH HER

When it comes to her mother, actress Myolie Wu — who will join fellow Hong Kong stars Nancy Sit and Teresa Mo for the concert — thinks what’s really important is to spend time together. “My mother and I usually share a meal on Mother’s Day. Sometimes I buy flowers for her. My parents divorced when I was very young, so I have a stepmother and a mother, and we relate to each other like friends.”

SHE RECOMMENDS: “For mothers who enjoy hiking, it’s very pleasant at the Tai Tam Reservoir and it’s not a very difficult hike. It’s very pretty and the air is fresh. But my own mother doesn’t like to hike, so I’ve taken her on a dinner cruise around Victoria Harbour to enjoy the night scenery.”

Mother’s Day Special — Hong Kong Superstars In Concert, is on May 10, 7.30pm, at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre, Level 6, Hall 601-604. Tickets from S$48 to S$168 from SISTIC. Dr Koo Glorious Concert is on June 20, 8pm at Resorts World Convention Centre. Tickets from S$28 to S$298 available from SISTIC starting May 10.
