SINGAPORE - It was a night of celebration and revelry for international Mandopop stars at the 15th Global Chinese Music Awards (GCMA), organised by seven regional radio stations and hosted by MediaCorp radio station YES 933.

Singers Zhang Jie, Kay Tse, Kenji Wu and Jolin Tsai were awarded the top awards at the awards ceremony, which was held last night (Nov 6) at Suntec City Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Zhang and Tse took home the Best Male and Female Artiste awards respectively, while Wu and Tsai were presented with the Most Popular Male and Female Artiste awards.

“It’s been seven years since I last visited Singapore and I am very happy to see everyone,” said Wu, who won three other awards including the Top Five Most Popular Male Artistes award, the Best Album Producer award and Top Twenty Hits award.

“I am particularly happy to receive the Best Album Producer award because I always feel like I am on vacation when I produce music,” the Taiwanese singer continued.

Chinese singer Zhang Jie, who also received a total of four awards, said he was happy for the opportunity to meet his fans in Singapore.

“It’s great to be able to meet my fans here, because I don’t get many opportunities to meet them, and they rarely get to hear me sing live too,” said Zhang, who also won trophies for Top Five Most Popular Male Artistes, Most Popular Duet and Top Twenty Hits.

“There are many great songwriters here, so I hope to be able to come and work with musicians here more frequently.”

Representing Singapore were singer-songwriter Olivia Ong, who won the Outstanding Regional Artiste Award (Singapore), as well as singers Kelly Poon and Derrick Hoh, who paid homage to Lion City musicians by performing a medley of songs by Singaporean talent.

“It’s been a while since my last release, so it’s been really nice and also encouraging for me to receive support from the local media and fans!” said Ong. “I really appreciate and an thankful for that.”

Other highlights of its the evening include performances by Taiwanese band Magic Power, Taiwanese singer Pets Tseng and Malaysian singer Victor Wong, who won three awards each.

But the climax of the evening came at the end of the show, when veteran Hong Kong singer Alex To sang a medley of crowd favourite tunes – including the provocative dance hit Take Off – after he was presented with the prestigious Honorary Award for his contributions to the music industry.

“I remember watching other singers before me receive this award. At that time I looked up to them. But time has gone by and today, I am receiving it,” said To, who entered showbiz in 1985. “I’m very touched but I am also afraid, because it feels like after I receive this award I will have to leave the industry!

“But there is still so much I want to do, and so much I want to contribute, so I will just think of this award as a form of encouragement, and I want to assure everyone that I will continue working hard.”

For Hong Kong singer Kay Tse, who bagged three awards including Top Five Most Popular Female Artistes and the Top Twenty Hits trophies, the best part of the show was the opportunity to dance along to To’s performance.

“I really regret not wearing more clothes, or I would have taken them off, like some of the other artistes did!” Tse quipped, referring to Zhang Jie, who had taken his jacket off in accordance to the lyrics of To’s song. “I wanted to take off my necklace, but it’s very expensive so I couldn’t do that.”
