MediaCorp help celebrate volunteerism in Singapore

SINGAPORE — Featuring the biggest gathering of beneficiaries, volunteers and members of the public in one venue, organisers hope the inaugural SG Care & Share Day will kick-start yet another year of good work for the needy in Singapore and inspire more to lend a helping hand.

A collaboration between MediaCorp and Community Chest, this inaugural volunteering event in the SG50 calendar, which takes place on Sunday from 1pm to 5pm at the Singapore Sports Hub, is the perfect opportunity to learn a new skill, experience what it is like to be a volunteer and understand more about social causes, and take in an afternoon of heart-warming and energetic performances by volunteers, beneficiaries and popular MediaCorp television and radio personalities.

The public can sign up for a number of useful hands-on activities. Participants can look forward to picking up key phrases that are useful for conversing with the elderly; learn from the ladies from REACH Community Services’ Blooms of Hope programme how to create simple floral arrangements; or try their hand at using Braille to make products such as name cards, bookmarks and tactile drawings.

“At the end of the day, we think people will come away with new skills that make volunteering fun and impactful,” said MediaCorp’s deputy chief executive officer Chang Long Jong.

Phillip Tan, chairman of Community Chest and the Care & Share @ SG50 Movement steering committee, added: “With greater interaction and understanding, I believe we can all step up to play a more active role in helping the less fortunate. I urge more Singaporeans to continue giving your time and talent. The most meaningful way to celebrate the nation’s success will be to start volunteering regularly in SG50.”
