Chris Hemsworth wants to be the bad guy

SINGAPORE — What was Chris Hemsworth’s one regret when it came to his latest film The Huntsman: Winter’s War? That he did not get to try the Ice Queen’s outfit on — or so he quipped.

In Singapore for the Asian premiere of the sequel to 2012’s Snow White and The Huntsman, the 32-year-old Australian actor’s co-star Jessica Chastain was asked in a group interview if the film would be more intense if Hemsworth played the Ice Queen, portrayed by Emily Blunt.

Hemsworth cut in without missing a beat, saying that it would have been a challenge. “Or would it?” he said, looking at Chastain with a smile. “I don’t know, it might have been very easy. I would like to try that outfit on. Oh, the one regret from me,” he said with a laugh.

Jokes aside, he did share that he would really like to play a baddie. “On that note, I would like to play an evil character, though. I think your parameters are kind of wide open in (that) you can do whatever you want.”

He added that the hero archetype is often “where there are a certain set of rules you have to stick to and play by, whereas the villain is kind of like a free for all”.

So what kind of villain would Hemsworth like to play?

“I don’t really know, but definitely one that has a sense of humour,” he said. “For me, someone like the Joker was one of the greatest villains. Because you kind of find yourself in a very crazy way agreeing with some of the things he’s saying. But he’s charismatic as well,” he said, explaining how it is a fun “roller-coaster ride” for the audience when they are conflicted “about who’s good and who’s bad”.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War opens in Singapore on April 14.
