SINGAPORE – Ian Fang will be playing the male lead in a Malaysian remake of the Chinese movie, Goodbye Mr Loser. The comedy, which was a box office sleeper hit in China last year, is about a middle-aged nobody who gets drunk, passes out and dreams of travelling back in time to pursue the girl who got away.

This adaptation is scheduled to open in cinemas in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan early next year.

Fang was present at a prayer ceremony held this morning in Kuala Lumpur to mark the start of work on the film. He will be in Malaysia for a month.

“I’m really very grateful and honoured to be a part of this production,” the 26-year-old said. “I appreciate everyone’s support and am especially thankful to my company and to the casting team for being so very supportive throughout this journey and for having so much faith in me. I believe that when an opportunity comes, you’ve got to seize it, and I will definitely give my 100 percent.”

He added: “There’s definitely some stress because it’s sort of a remake of a highly successful movie, but I believe that stress is good because there’s where I get motivation and learn and grow beyond what I am.”

He is especially excited about taking on the role of a comedic protagonist. “I often portray the rich, spoilt boy or the delinquent, so everyone naturally thinks I’m like that. But this time, I get to play a character from a young age to maturity, and he has an emotional journey that I have not played before. There are comedic scenes, yes, but also a lot of emotional and heart-wrenching scenes. Also, I get to sing, play the piano and the guitar, so this role will showcase parts of me that many people, including my mum, don’t really know about.”

Fang’s previous film credits include 2012’s Imperfect and 2014’s Meeting The Giant.
