SINGAPORE – Jack Neo will be making a new movie to celebrate Singapore’s 50th birthday next year, the Singaporean filmmaker announced today (Dec 10).
The two-part movie, titled Long Long Time Ago, will tell the story of a mother raising her children in the days after Singapore’s declaration of independence in 1965, as well as the 50 years following.
Long Long Time Ago, which is produced by J Team Productions and mm2 Entertainment, will have a budget of “at least S$6 million”. The first part of the movie is slated for release at the end of 2015, and the second will hit screens during Chinese New Year, 2016.
“I want to tell a story that begins in 1965, after Singapore became independent,” Neo told reporters at the Singapore Media Festival, where he made the announcement. “(The movie will be about) how Singaporeans lived after the split from Malaysia, how life changed, and how they overcame obstacles.”
He added: “We will revisit the memories of those old days, and examine our new circumstances. What have we gained and lost in the last 50 years, and what will we do in the next 50? These are some of the things we will look at in our new movie.”
