The Seven Year Itch dress crowned most iconic screen costume

LONDON — When you think of Marilyn Monroe, you think of her wearing the white halterneck dress from The Seven Year Itch, don’t you? It’s no surprise then that it has been voted the most iconic screen outfit of all time.
Created by costume designer William Travilla for the 1955 film, the dress is famously worn by Monroe and paired with a bright red lipstick as she stands on a subway grille and a gust of air blows it up, making for one of the best-known film scenes in cinematic history.
In the survey commissioned by the British Heart Foundation, Monroe’s gown is followed by Dorothy’s famous Wizard Of Oz get-up (a blue gingham dress and ruby slippers); Olivia Newton John’s Grease get-up (skin tight black leggings and red mules), Ursula Andress’ bikini in Dr No and Audrey Hepburn’s Hubert de Givenchy cocktail dress in Breakfast At Tiffany’s.
Also included in the top 10 list are: The red Baywatch swimming costumes, cartoon character Jessica Rabbit’s glittering split-to-the-thigh red dress and Michael Jackson’s red leather Thriller costume.
One thing that the majority of the outfits have in common is the colour red and as such, the survey was carried out to highlight the foundation’s Ramp Up The Red campaign to raise awareness of coronary heart disease. THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
