LOS ANGELES — Twentieth Century Fox has set the X-Men spin-off Gambit for Oct 7 next year. The Gambit character, to be played by Channing Tatum, is an expert card-thrower and has the power to manipulate kinetic energy. The Gambit movie, written by Joshua Zetumern, will be Fox’s eighth X-Men film. It will open less than five months after X-Men: Apocalypse debuts on May 27 that same year.

Gambit was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Marc Silvestri in 1990, and made his first full appearance in Uncanny X-Men issue No 266. The mutant quickly became a fan favourite and his roguish nature and romance with Rogue have helped him launch several solo series. The character was previously portrayed on film by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Fox also announced on Monday that it had set or shifted dates for six other films; most notably, moving its next Planet Of The Apes movie back a year to July 14, 2017. (The studio had originally planned to open its ninth Planet Of The Apes on July 29, 2016.) Fox successfully rebooted the Apes franchise in 2011 with Rise Of The Planet Of Apes, which grossed US$482 million (S$643 million) worldwide. This year’s Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes was even more successful with box office takings of more than US$700 million.

Fox also moved the Fantastic Four sequel, originally planned for July 14, 2017, to June 2, 2017. Fox’s reboot of Fantastic Four, directed by Josh Trank and starring Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B Jordan and Jamie Bell, will open on August 7. Zetumern also wrote this screenplay. It will face off against Warner Bros’ Live By Night and Universal’s Monster High.

The studio dated two films for next year’s holiday season — the touted video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed, starring Michael Fassbender with Justin Kurzel directing, has been dated for Dec 21 next year; and the PT Barnum biopic The Greatest Showman On Earth, starring Hugh Jackman, will open on Dec 25. Romance movie The Mountain Between Us, starring Charlie Hunnam and Rosamund Pike, has been set for Feb 10, 2017. REUTERS
