SINGAPORE - She has received flak for “selling out” after releasing her pop album Sucker, but Charli XCX is handling the heat that inevitably comes with fame just fine.

“As a musician, as a public figure, I don’t really try to please everyone. I just please myself,” the 22-year-old said at an interview at the Hard Rock Hotel earlier this afternoon (April 22), ahead of her Singapore concert at the Coliseum. “Not everybody is going to like that and I understand that. Some people choose not to voice that and other people choose to really voice it. That doesn’t bother me.

“It’s kind of funny actually sometimes. Some people get really creative with their insults. My best friends, God bless them, always like to screen grab the most abusive ones and send them to me. I have a collage of them in my phone,” the Boom Clap singer deadpanned.

The British singer, whose real name is Charlotte Emma Aitchison, also talked about her idol Britney Spears, and how she was jealous that Australian hip hop artiste Iggy Azalea - with whom she collaborated on the hit single, Fancy - got to work with Spears on an upcoming song called Pretty Girls. If she had the opportunity to spend a full day with the pop singer, Charli XCX said would make sure she made every minute count.

“I probably would go ice skating with her and maybe we will get milk shakes,” she quipped. “And maybe we will go to the studio and listen to J-pop music together and then go to a disco together. And play with puppies too.”

Charli XCX’s concert happens later tonight (April 22) at 8pm at The Coliseum, Hard Rock Hotel, Singapore Resorts World Sentosa. Tickets at S$98 from SISTIC.
