SINGAPORE—Giving new meaning to the saying “a voice for radio”, LOVE97.2FM DJ Wallace Ang has released a new album.

The self-titled album Wallace consists of eight Mandarin tracks composed, performed and produced by Ang himself.

“I’ve always loved music. Since I was young, I’ve enjoyed singing, and I’ve always wanted to be a singer,” Ang said. “But it’s not easy to be a singer in Singapore, especially when the entertainment circle here is so small.”

What you might not know is that this is actually his second album. “I released an album in 2008 titled Roles, but it wasn’t a product that I was very satisfied with, so I’ve always wanted to come up with another album that I can be proud of,” he said.

Ang admitted that perhaps he could have done a better job for that one. “I think it’s the same for every artist — maybe five years down the road, looking back at what I’m doing now, I will think there is room for improvement.”

For now, though, he’s “quite satisfied” with how the new album has turned out. “I’ve worked with many good musicians in terms of arrangement, mixing and mastering,” he said. “Being able to sing something that you composed is very satisfying. It’s a kind of experience you cannot put into words. As far as possible, I would like to sing my own compositions.”

One of the most personal songs on the album is a track called Live Now Love Now. “I realised that many people like to talk about their past during conversations or on social media,” he explained. “Many people have forgotten that they should enjoy what’s in front of them, and not keep looking back and holding onto the past. Since we are living in the now, we should be loving ‘now’.”

So, he doesn’t like throwbacks, then? “I do like throwbacks in terms of OOTDs or Instagram posts, but I think the past is the past and we should always enjoy what we have now,” he smiled. “It’s okay to feel a bit nostalgic sometimes, but I think it’s more important to cherish what we have in front of us, such as our friends and family.”

Ang himself is someone who lives in the moment, adding that he has never been “a very logical person”. “For me, it’s always spur-of-the-moment – when I feel like doing something and I think I can do it, I will do it and I will try to overcome whatever difficulties that get in my way,” he said.

And that’s why he said he now has a new album to show for it. The question is: Since he has a day job as a DJ, will he be playing his own songs on loop? “I will try, as much as possible, without getting a call from my boss!” he quipped.

He added: “There is always a story behind every song – the inspiration; how the lyrics came about. So, I think it’ll be fun to share (those to the listening audience). But … I can’t just keep playing my songs all the time. Then again, maybe I can!”
