SINGAPORE — First it was Miley Cyrus’ tongue and her provocative performance with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA).

This year, even before the show has started, things are already heating up. It seems like MTV Video Music Awards can never escape some form of drama.

Earlier this morning (JULY 22), VMA nominations were revealed and to the dismay of many, especially to Nicki Minaj herself, her hit Anaconda was not part of the list.

Anaconda broke VEVO records and was even spoofed by Ellen Degeneres. Taylor Swift’s Bad Blood also broke records. Except, Bad Blood got a VMA nomination and Anaconda didn’t.

Minaj took to twitter to voice her disappointment in a series of tweets, alleging inequality in the music industry affected the outcome of the nomination.

“When the “other” girls drop a video that breaks records and impacts culture they get the nomination,” tweeted Minaj.

And of course, in true Taylor Swift fashion, she took this tweet personally and well, had to make it about herself. She has since deleted her tweets, but it did not escape Team Minaj.

“I’ve done nothing but love & support you,” Swift tweeted to Minaj, adding: “It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot.”

To which Nicki replied,

And Taylor Swift did.

“If I win, please come up with me!! You’re invited to any stage I’m ever on,” she tweeted back.

Sounds like an invite to a haha-i-won-and-you-didn’t-even-get-nominated party more than anything.

GETTING IN ON THE ACTION

Their conversation ended there, but the urge to be part of this spat was too much for Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran to resist, both of whom are up for the Video of the Year category.

“Yo I want in on this twitter Beef!! VMA’s is the new WWF!! @edsheeran F*** You!” tweeted Mars.

This was followed by Ed Sheeran taking a jab at the 1.65m singer’s height in typical Sheeran style.

To which Bruno replied, in what was a clever use of puns,

Ed Sheeran continues the friendly “spat”:

If this is just the beginning of the VMA’s, who knows what spit-balling action awaits as it draws closer.

The VMA’s will be aired live on August 30 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and hosted by Miley Cyrus.
