Get ready to mosh to MICappella

SINGAPORE – On paper, local vocal group MICappella may seem like your typical a cappella group, in that its six members – Peter Huang, Calin Wong, Juni Goh, Eugene Yip, Tay Kexin and Goh Mingwei – perform songs sans music instruments.

SINGAPORE – On paper, local vocal group MICappella may seem like your typical a cappella group, in that its six members – Peter Huang, Calin Wong, Juni Goh, Eugene Yip, Tay Kexin and Goh Mingwei – perform songs sans music instruments.

However, anyone who has attended to their shows knows that, unlike other groups, they don’t just stand there and sing, and the audience are not required to sit politely and applaud.

That’s why, at their coming show on Nov 4 at Capitol Theatre, the group have allocated a standing area for fans “who want to mosh”.

“It might be an unusual concept for an a cappella concert, but while we are an a cappella group, we’re not a group that conforms to typical a cappella norms in terms of material or what we do,” said Huang.

“We like to rock out, and there are fans who like us for that. We’d like to think ourselves as a band, anyway.”

The group’s breakthrough came in 2012, when they came in second at the Sing! China competition show, but they have been growing from strength to strength since.

Just this year alone, they came in first place at the international Moscow Spring A Cappella Festival, and also took the award for Best Asian Album at the 2017 Contemporary A Cappella Recording awards in the US for their second album, MICappella Reloaded, which was released last year.

They also released a new music video for the song, Unafraid Of Defeat, a rap-tinged number off Reloaded.

The group is flying off on Friday (Sept 22) to Busan for the Asian Song Festival, where they will be taking the stage with the likes of popular South Korean K-pop outfit EXO; one of Japan’s top stars, Mika Nakashima; and young Indonesian pop sensation Shae.

The November concert in Singapore will be the first major solo show that MICappella has done “in years”, said Huang, adding that the members are looking forward to it, if only because performing in Singapore has always meant a lot to them.

“People have often asked us when we’re going to do a full concert here – because we usually only do corporate shows or a slot at a festival – so after a lot of waiting on their part, we’re finally doing it,” he said.

Huang said the group is indebted to their fans for their support through the years, and that they are “working hard to deliver a good show” that will have some surprises.

“I’m not going to tell you what – you have to come to the show!” said Huang. “But this show will be a lot of fun.”

“It’s on home ground so we hold this show in high regard – not that we don’t like performing overseas, we do – but there’s always something special about performing here. For one thing, we can speak more Singlish!” he quipped.

MICappella’s You And I concert is on Nov 11 at the Capitol Theatre. Tickets from S$48 to S$78 from APACtix.
