SINGAPORE — We’re only days away from St Jerome’s Laneway Festival Singapore 2016, and no doubt fans have all started getting ready for a day of music and revelry.

Laneway Singapore, which sold out last year, and is on its sixth edition in Singapore, will be held at The Meadow at Gardens By The Bay on Saturday. Its line-up features the likes of Scottish electronic band Chvrches, Canada’s experimental pop artiste Grimes, indie pop duo Purity Ring, British pop rock band The 1975 and American experimental rock band Battles. You’ve also got Singaporean acts Riot !n Magenta, Intriguant and Cashew Chemists.

Last week, festival organisers also announced the installation of a fourth stage, set up by local collective Syndicate, that will bring together local and international electronic DJs and visual artists, such as Australia’s JPS, Singapore’s Mean and visual artist Brandon Tay with accompanying duo Kiat & Kane.

Seems like it’s going to be a pretty happening festival yet again. But just how do you make the most of the day?

Well, Rosalyn Lee and Tracy Phillips would certainly know. The two music lovers and DJs from Laneway’s official radio station Lush 99.5FM share how they’re gearing up for the festival, and also offer some tips on how to get by on the day: From which acts they are looking forward to to what their must-bring items are at the popular indie music festival.

Q: How happy are you with this
year’s line-up?

Rosalyn: Honestly? I attend Laneway with almost fresh ears every year, and always end up having a wicked time discovering new sounds. I’m always excited about rock acts. I’m most excited to catch Violent Soho ‘cos I’m a huge fan of grunge.

Tracy: I’m most excited about catching acts I have not seen live yet, like The Internet, Hudson Mohawke and Shamir, although I’m always happy to catch Chvrches, Grimes and Beach House, too.

Q: If you could put a Laneway prep playlist together, what songs would you include?

Rosalyn: Wah, I don’t ever do prep playlists for concerts I attend! I love going in blind. Besides, I don’t know enough about the music by the artists at Laneway to do up a substantial list. I’m not going to pretend I know and just go with the flow and be open to new experiences.

Q: What is your favourite non-music aspect of Laneway?

Tracy: The overall vibe. It’s nice to just be able to lie on the grass and take it all in. Last year, I especially liked seeing florist Triceratops making flower garlands and seeing everyone, boys included, walking around with fresh flowers in their hair.

Rosalyn: The food! I’m more of a foodie than a music nerd. I loved last year’s Laneway food offerings! Freshly shucked oysters, fish burgers … yum.

Q: What are some of your must-bring items to a festival such as this?

Tracy: A mat to lie on, a raincoat, sunnies and a good bunch of people to revel with.

Rosalyn: A handheld battery-operated fan, a clear poncho, sunscreen, lip balm and a positive attitude — leave bad vibes at the door or don’t come in at all.

Q: It’s always a balance with these kinds of events. So what’s your favourite and least favourite aspects of Laneway?

Tracy: My favourites are getting there by sunset for that magical time when day becomes night, and discovering new acts I’ve not had the chance to see live. My least favourite is the fact that it ends by midnight and I’m left wondering what to do next, because I’m still on a high from so much
good music.

Rosalyn: My favourite would be being around people who love discovering music. Least favourite? The fake plastic flower headbands that these hipster girls wear. Eh, flower shops in Little India can string you fresh ones that cost almost nothing, you know.
