SINGAPORE — One of Singapore’s veteran rock bands, Plainsunset, has released their new single on Friday (July 29).

Called 6/4 — or “six-four” — the song is a punchy guitar-drenched rock track performed in that time-signature in the verses, before switching to the more recognisable 4/4 or “common time” signature.

An accompanying music video — a collaboration between Plainsunset and noted lensman Fandy Razak, and featuring the band capering around a multi-storey carpark at night — was also released on YouTube.

“6/4 is one of the first songs for this album that was written (for the album) and follows the mind of someone who flits from relationship to relationship,” explained Jon Chan, the frontman of Plainsunset.

He added: “Many things can be compared to being with someone reflecting on a relationship from the past, and resolving to go forward, and do it differently.”

The song is a harbinger of their new and final full-length album Both Boxer & Benjamin, which is slated for release in the last quarter of 2016. The album will contain 13 tracks, with noted producer Leonard Soosay manning the desk.

According to the band, the title is a nod to two of his favourite characters from George Orwell’s Animal Farm. “It’s the idealist and the cynic and how you can be both at the same time,” he recently said during a Q&A session at Baybeats.

The album, Chan said, is about social politics and includes songs such as 6/4 and Pioneer, a song “about the Singapore music scene, about bands such as Stomping Ground, LC93, Concave Scream, Humpback Oak ... the guys who have been around”.

“It’s paying tribute to a lot of the stuff that they did such that we had the chance to follow that up,” he said.

Plainsunset has been one of the most influential bands in Singapore since it was formed in 1996. The band has released with four full-length albums, two special compilation issues and one EP under its belt.

Plainsunset has also performed on various stages around the world, including Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, New Zealand, China and most recently, Australia.
