Album review: Devil (Chiodos)

SINGAPORE — The new Chiodos album marks the return of original vocalist Craig Owens after an acrimonious split in 2009. In addition, original drummer Derrick Frost was also welcomed back with open arms. Together with the signing of the band to the Razor & Tie label, these events set up a fresh beginning for the post-hardcore outfit which resulted in a committed showing on Devil. Incongruously, the album opens with a faux-classical piece (U.G. Introduction) before the heavy hitting strains of We’re Talking About Practice places the listener in familiar territory. Songs like Ole Fishlips Is Dead Now, Why The Munsters Matter and Behvis Bullock dwell deeply in metalcore trappings, with the melodies contrasting sharply with the visceral impact of frenetic musicality. For diehard fans, this is an exciting return to the power and dynamism of the Bone Palace Ballet album. Chiodos will perform live in Singapore at TAB on Feb 25. Tickets available at http://upsurgeproductions.com/event/chiodos/ and at Inokii, Far East Plaza #03-30.
