Album review: Imagene Peise — Atlas Eets Christmas (The Flaming Lips)

SINGAPORE — Wayne Coyne and company are no strangers to the mundo bizarro move, of course. The eccentric group has carte blanche to do virtually everything and somehow get away with it with artistic integrity all intact. So here’s a Christmas album that bears all the trappings of one, but with a trademark Flaming Lips twist to keep things interesting. Basically, its formula is to take familiar standards and put them through the psychedelic rock wringer. One is fully aware of the weird ride ahead starting from the opening Winter Wonderland, where pristine piano, Hollywood strings, sitar and Moog synth samples all collide. A note of caution: The strangeness might wear out its freaky welcome halfway through—even for diehard Lips fans.
