Crush Songs (Karen O) | 2/5

SINGAPORE — Karen O, the pin-up girl of the post-punk revival and Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman, has finally released a solo album. It’s something that is as left field from mainstream indie pop as one can imagine — could these 15 song demos (because that’s what they sound like) be an artistic statement that makes it hip and cool, and thus appealing to O’s millennial hipster followers? That could explain why Crush Songs was not released on a major label but on The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas’ aptly named Cult Records instead. Seriously, folks, the tracks are at best sketches with production values that include loud hissing noises somewhat reminiscent of the ‘90s lo-fi movement. On that basis, there’s not much to recommend Crush Songs with. You’ll have to be a rabid fan to be able to put up with this collection of demos.
