But of course, one can also say that quality has less to do with time and place and more to do with the people behind the scenes — the songwriters and producers — and their creative decisions and priorities.

The first thing one notices about LP (aka Laura Pergolizzi) is her impressive voice, a distinct, powerful and memorable instrument that even the most jaded cynic would fine irresistible. But what truly seals the deal for this compelling collection of songs is the stellar songwriting. Mostly collaborations between LP and a host of top contemporary pop songwriters, these will have you listening all the way through and ultimately hitting “repeat”.

Mind you, LP is no overnight sensation, having paid her dues for over a decade. She cut her teeth as a marginalised recording artist but, more importantly, penned hit tunes for the likes of Rihanna. It’s now this feisty singer-songwriter’s turn in the spotlight, with songs like Heavenly Light and Night Like This, and for any rocker reading this, this is one pop album you must get.
