The Free Show 2014 (Wang Leehom) | 3/5

SINGAPORE — Every year, Wang Leehom performs a free concert for a small group of his fans in a different city: Taipei in 2012, Shanghai in 2013 and Singapore in 2014. And, as its name suggests, The Free Show 2014 captures the Mandopop superstar’s show in Singapore on New Year’s Day this year in a pretty neat package.

With only 10 tracks, The Free Show 2014 isn’t exactly the most comprehensive collection of Wang’s greatest hits, though he does perform popular hits like Heart Beat, Forever’s First Day, Crying Palms and Love Rival Beethoven. His most loyal fans will also appreciate listening to Wang singing songs like Billy Joel’s Lullabye as well as the English demo version of Forgetting Time, Forgetting Myself (All I Think About Is You), which was performed for the first time in public at this concert. The real downer is the accompanying DVD. It only has seven tracks and is so shoddy it looks like it was filmed illegally on a mobile phone.

But, to be fair, The Free Show 2014 is an enjoyable performance to listen to. And for those fans who didn’t manage to get tickets to his show this year, this is probably about as close an experience as it gets.

Until next year’s Free Show, of course.
